Who is affected

Roughly 2,800 residents rely on this crossing to reach clinics, schools and the Mtubatuba economic hub via the R618 — in a district with high medical vulnerability.

What has happened at this site

Mtubatuba and surrounding wards experience some of the most severe flash flooding in KZN. In April 2022 scores of Mtubatuba homes were inundated and roads severely damaged, with wards such as Dukuduku requiring emergency drainage. The tributary widens to 22–24 m during storms and repeated washouts are documented.
