Who is affected

Roughly 2,600 residents, with 600 schoolchildren crossing a river that swells dangerously through the summer season.

What has happened at this site

Mthingwevu Luqolweni waited 13 years for a municipal bridge while repeated drownings and near-drownings occurred as learners crossed the swollen Mthingwevu River — matriculants missed final exams. In 2024 households each contributed R400, raising R28,000 to build 'Ibholorho yabantu' (The People's Bridge) themselves; the municipality then ordered its demolition on safety grounds.
