Who is affected

Around 5,000 residents across Mdantsane zones and the Joe Slovo settlement, cut off from schools and clinics when the tributary rises.

What has happened at this site

In January 2022, 58 mm of rain in 24 hours left scores displaced across Mdantsane; eight people died in Buffalo City including two children who drowned in the Buffalo River. In June 2026 more than 200 residents again sought emergency assistance after renewed flooding.
