Who is affected

Roughly 2,500 residents whose access to schools, clinics and the main road to Mahikeng is cut when the seasonal wetland overflows.

What has happened at this site

Deelpan endured prolonged flooding through 2021 and 2022, with the March 2022 event the worst in decades — the village was effectively submerged, over 2,000 people affected, 98 households displaced and 103 replacement houses subsequently built. The Premier and national deputy ministers visited the site.

Public benefit when complete

Ends the repeated multi-day isolation of an entire village, restoring access for farm workers and small traders and protecting elderly and chronically ill residents who currently become stranded.
